6z GFS Model Images

For those of you that follow the models, here's the latest 6z GFS. Instead of posting all these images in the group, I figured it would be easier to throw it all into an article. The first image is from hour 48 (The hour is listed in the top left corner). This would be 1am Monday morning. It's the 850MB Height, Temperature, and Winds. Basically the RED LINE between the blue and the green depicts 0 degrees Celsius. The blue means it's cold enough aloft to snow, the green means that it would be rain.

The next image (MSLP) depicts how much liquid will fall during that 6 hour period. This gives you an idea when the precipitation moves in, when it's the heaviest, and when it moves out.

Both of these images are posted for hours 48, 54, 60, 66, and 72. Scroll down and you'll be able to compare each image. For example, scroll down to hour 54.

Hour 48

EXAMPLE: On hour 54, anywhere in the GREEN on the 850's Map is probably seeing RAIN while areas in the BLUE are seeing SNOW. If you look at the MSLP at hour 54, it shows up to 0.1" of liquid in areas that are BLUE on the 850's map. While areas in the green will get 0.1 to 0.25" of liquid during this time period. Thus, steadier rain has moved into Southern areas while Northern areas are seeing light snow.

Hour 54 shows conditions favorable for FREEZING RAIN in the PINK shaded areas before changing to plain rain.
